Why try homeopathy before conventional medicines? By Connie Menezes

Mayo Advertiser, May 22, 2009.

Connie Menezes, a registered homeopath explains to Mayo Advertiser readers how homeopathic medicine works.

Symptoms, in homeopathy, are seen as positive indications of the body’s attempt to maintain the status quo, rather than manifestations of the disease itself. As a homeopath, I cannot treat one symptom alone to the exclusion of all the others described to me during a consultation. Rather than labelling a disease, I seek to discover the underlying cause of the problem. This may be mental, emotional, physical, or a combination of these factors. I look at the person as a whole.

An allopathic drug is considered effective if it elicits a response. From my perspective, this would be a treatment failure if the underlying problem has not been addressed. So, if a person with hayfever is given anti-histamines and the hayfever is cured, but his/her overall health has not improved, the patient then becomes reliant upon a drug treatment every time the hayfever returns. Homeopathy can produce better long-term results.

If you have a strong constitution, your body’s ability to recover during illness is likely to be good. However, if you become ill when you are already feeling run down, the composite healing process is far more complicated. Seeking homeopathic treatment is invaluable when your own immune system fails.

Despite its efficacy, Homeopathy is often used as the last resort. Years of unsuccessful drug treatment for conditions such as asthma, migraine, rheumatism, and eczema frequently precede the first visit to a homeopath who is then unfairly expected to administer a quick fix. Regular homeopathic consultations are recommended to ensure your immune system remains healthy.
