Soothe your stress by Eugenie Rowson

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, what would you give your stress level right now? When I ask my patients this question, one patient might answer: “Not very high; about 7”, while another might say: “Oh, it’s very high at the moment; about 7”.

Mental and physical exhaustion is no longer exclusive to high-powered executives. In this busy world of ours, today even schoolchildren are under enormous pressure. So how do we measure stress? Is it defined by what is happening to us, or rather how we perceive what is happening to (or around) us?

The causes of stress are known as stressors, and we are faced with literally hundreds of them every day. Any event that a person finds threatening or difficult to cope with can be a potential cause of stress. Stress is a subjective experience and what one person may find stressful, another may not. We feel stressed when we extend or push ourselves beyond the point at which we feel at ease. Each person weighs up a situation, activity or demand against his or her past experience and outcomes; and his or her coping skills will determine the response to the stressor at that particular time.

Stress is a strained physical, mental or emotional response to the various daily hassles, demands, changes and events in our lives. Such stressors result in a feeling of physical, mental or emotional dis-ease. External stressors include major life events such as starting a new job, marriage, moving home, having a baby, a death in the family, divorce and financial strain.

Secondary to these are our daily life hassles, of which there are numerous. Ongoing trials and tribulations are believed to cause us the most stress of all, and can subsequently disorder our health. We are plagued by the demands of daily life including tight deadlines, traffic jams, fear of crime, shopping, queuing, nasty neighbours, losing the car keys, time pressures, long working hours, excess noise, arguments, relatives and even burning the dinner. Our perception of stress is further influenced by internal factors such as our beliefs, expectations, levels of perfectionism, personality, past experiences, level of self-esteem, confidence and mental attitude.

Stress can have a multitude of symptoms or dis-eases. The symptoms of stress are caused by the hormone adrenaline which prepares the body for the flight and fight reaction – a certain amount of which is beneficial and assists us in ‘winning the race’. However, it may also bring on negative feelings, emotions and even physical symptoms. Some negative emotions that accompany stress and our response to stressful situations may include anger, fear, anxiety, resentment, despair, anticipatory fears, irritability, loneliness, depression, fear of failure, tearfulness, feelings of inadequacy and being overwhelmed, panic, anxiety and worry, and many more.

Mind symptoms may include brainfog, poor memory, confusion, lack of mental clarity, being easily distracted, poor concentration, nitpicking or faultfinding, inability to switch off, aversion to mental work, and more. A bombardment of mental, emotional and physical stressors in the long term also results in a range of physical symptoms such as adrenal gland burn-out, exhaustion, anxiety or depression, reduced coping ability, high blood pressure, poor blood sugar regulation, headaches, digestion disorders, unexplained hair loss, low libido, sleep disorders, water retention, weak memory and many more ailments, some of them serious.

What matters most is that we recognise when we are feeling stressed, worn out, wiped out, drained, shattered, beat, weary, tired, exhausted, fatigued, done-in, dog-tired, useless, pooped or exhausted, and find effective ways of correcting it.
