Should I write off my weight gain, high BP, cholesterol, depression, menopausal symptoms to old age?

Q: I am a 62-year-old female. I have always been quite healthy, exercising, eating well, etc. I used HRT for 5 years (45 to 50 years of age). Since the age of 55, I have picked up 15kg. I don’t eat badly at all. I am an active person. I just can’t seem to shake the weight. I get very bad joint pain in 2 fingers on my left hand. I don’t seem to get to sleep easily, and am restless. I sometimes get brain fog.

I also feel sad some days, with mood swings. I also get neck strain from my work, and work quite long hours. When tired, worried, I get irritable. Normally I am a very patient / caring/ well-adjusted business person. I am usually the one to give others advice and support. I feel I am only going through menopause now. What do you suggest? I do not get cold easily, nor do I get overly hot easily. I just don’t feel myself.

I have been diagnosed with high BP bordering on 140/90 sometimes. I use Micardus 80mg for it. I am also on Losec, as I was diagnosed with a stomach bug a while ago. I also use a statin 20mg, because of family history of high cholesterol.

I not an unhappy person, I love life, but it is time to do something about my condition. I do not want to write it off to age.

A: The convention medicines you are taking are suppressive (non-curative) and have lots of nasty side-effects – in my experience it will be almost impossible to feel healthy and balanced on such medications. There are some natural alternatives that you should consider and discuss with your doctor/health card provider:

  • Red Yeast Rice Extract (in the name of Rychol by MNI, or Cholestaway by Solal) for lowering your cholesterol without side effects
  • Lycomato ( a tomato extract) to lower your blood pressure (available from Dischem and other health shops)
  • Lycopodium 200c & Carbo Veg  200c  – use together for all sorts of digestive disorders, reflux, heartburn, indigestion, etc
  • Sepia 200c  –  would also suit you for prevention and correction of emotional & menopause-related symptoms.
