Natural Remedies for Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Hand foot mouth

Recently there has been an outbreak of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in schools and crèches. The illness is characterised by fever, sore throat, reduced appetite and blisters or sores in the mouth, on the palms and feet. These blisters sometimes only occur a few days after the fever has begun. Little ones become very sore, itchy and uncomfortable.

Below are some quick natural remedies you can try to alleviate symptoms of hand, foot and mouth diseases.

1. Antiviral Teas
These can be warm or cold, depending on what is more soothing for your little one’s sore mouth.
Lemon Balm: Dried lemon balm has a subtle lemony flavor that isn’t too strong for little ones (not fresh, though!). Brew a little and add a bit of raw honey once it’s cooled some. (Don’t use honey for babies under one year.)
Rooibos Tea: South Africa’s favourite tea. It is naturally sweet and so good. It has antiviral properties and pairs well with the elderberry tea.
Peppermint: Available at most shops. Don’t make this too strong, though, or most young children won’t drink it.
Elderberry: A few cups a day is delicious and wonderful for fighting viruses.

2. Coconut Oil
Virgin coconut oil is antiviral and a great natural remedy. It is naturally solid at room temperature, so it can be used as a salve, or you can even put a scoop in the bathtub as a bath oil. For an extra boost, infuse it with some lemon balm and calendula. Apply as often as desired.

3. Tea Tree Oil
To help prevent the virus from spreading, use a liquid hand soap and add 2 or 3 drops of tea tree oil to each bottle. Encourage your kids to wash their hands as often as possible.

4. Cold Beverages
If your child is afflicted with hand, foot and mouth disease, it’s vital that they stay hydrated at all times. Try given them cold water, milk and ice to soothe the blisters in the mouth and avoid acidic foods such as orange juice, soda and other fruit juice. Avoid salty or spicy foods and rinse mouth with warm water after eating to help soothe the pain.
