The benefits of homeopathy

Homeopathy

Many people have heard homeopathy mentioned but few actually have an understanding of what it really is. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), homeopathy is now the second largest system of medicine in the world, growing annually by 20 to 25%. With such dominance in the alternative healing market, it’s worth uncovering exactly why people are turning to homeopathy.

Homeopathy

What is homeopathy?

German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, first developed homeopathy in the 18th century. Based on the principle of ‘like cures like’, homeopathy works harmoniously with the body’s immune system to stimulate its own defence system and healing powers. Homeopathic remedies are created using materials derived from flora, fauna and minerals prepared by repeatedly diluting substances using a shaking method called succession.

Evidence of homeopathy

The biggest controversy surrounding homeopathy is a lack of scientific evidence linked to its healing properties. As it stands, there is still a $1 million reward – put up by American, James Randi, 40 years ago – for anyone able to provide convincing evidence of the effects of homeopathy. But this is still to be claimed. However, this does not disprove the effectiveness of the properties but rather underpins the profound lack of understanding about exactly how it works.

Combination of both medicine and homeopathy

One misconception is that those who use homeopathic remedies completely disregard conventional medicine whereas many homeopaths advocate a combination of both. Conventional medicine is designed to treat acute reactions immediately while homeopathic remedies will work to assist the body in healing, complementing each other well. A 2005 study published in the Homeopathy Journal showed that ICU patients suffering from severe sepsis stood a better chance when treated with a combination. Where only 50% treated with conventional medicine survived, the chances increased by about 25% when homeopathic remedies were introduced.

Benefits of homeopathy

The surge in new homeopathy patients is a direct result of the incredible benefits associated with the treatment. Here are a few examples.

1. Customised treatment

Each patient is different which means that each homeopathic remedy is customised to treat an individual’s symptoms while taking a person’s history, body and needs into account. One area where homeopathy differs from conventional medicine is that a patient’s emotions and personality are considered before a remedy is administered. A homeopathic doctor will often discuss stress levels, relationships and personal characteristics to assist in the best remedy and dosage for the individual.

2. Holistic healing

Rather than treating isolated symptoms, homeopathy seeks to provide holistic care, with each patient considered unique. A person is an integrated entity comprising physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social aspects, all of which need to work harmoniously. An individual’s health is not just based on the absence of illness, but on the ability of the system to heal, renew and adapt. Taking this into account, homeopathy looks to stimulate the body’s own natural healing powers to bring well-being rather than providing superficial relief. This will often result, not only in the disappearance of symptoms, but improvement in overall energy, mood, digestion and sleep.

3. Cost-effective

Being generic, non-patented substances, homeopathic medicines are more inexpensive than traditional prescription drugs. Because homeopaths need to obtain a lot of information from patients, consultations might be more expensive, but the patient should need fewer consultations than with conventional medicine as homeopathy treats the whole individual. This makes it a much more cost-effective treatment in the long run.

4. Safe treatment

Homeopathy is completely safe. Unlike other medications, homeopathic remedies are all non-toxic and do not have any adverse side effects. They are natural remedies using very small amounts of flora, fauna and minerals, making them suitable for pregnant women and children. Unlike antibiotics, homeopathic medicines do not hamper the body’s digestion or lower the body’s resistance. They also do not cause allergies, addictions or damage to the body, in any way, if taken over a long period of time.

For chronic illness, acute sickness or general health issues, homeopathy is certainly worth considering as a holistic, safe healing option.
